Newburgh Breaks Ground on Wastewater Treatment Plant Facility Upgrades
The Town of Newburgh hosted a groundbreaking ceremony on June 10th to launch the Wastewater Treatment Plant Improvements Project. The project represents a significant investment in the Town’s wastewater infrastructure and is designed to address capacity needs, improve stormwater resilience, and continue to protect public health and the environment

“These upgrades are an important step in strengthening Newburgh’s infrastructure for
today and for future growth,” said Chris Cooke, Town Administrative Manager. “By
improving the wastewater treatment system’s capacity and reliability, the Town is helping
reduce the risk of overflows, protect residents, and safeguard local waterways.”
Key components of the project include the construction of a 4-million-gallon wet weather
equalization tank, which will temporarily store excess stormwater during heavy rainfall
until the treatment plant can process it. This added capacity will help reduce the risk of
system overflows and backups into homes during major rain events.
The project also includes a new headworks screening facility upstream of the tank. This
facility will enhance screening and debris removal, helping protect downstream treatment
processes. It is also designed to be expandable to support future community growth and
potential plant expansion.
Additionally, the project will improve hydraulic performance, provide system redundancy,
and emergency preparedness capabilities. In emergency situations, the tank can function
to store foreign flows, helping reduce the risk of environmental contamination.
