Portage Breaks Ground on WWTP Improvements

On March 26, the City of Portage, Indiana broke ground on the Wastewater Treatment Plant’s Improvements Project which includes replacing the 43-year-old clarifiers and adding a solar field to reduce energy costs.

These improvements will provide critical rehabilitation to the wastewater treatment plant screening and other processes to ensure the city discharges quality effluent to the Burns Waterway and Lake Michigan. The solar field will help the city offset a significant component of the energy usage associated with treating their wastewater.

U.S. Rep Frank Mrvan says the $8 million Portage project to replace aging clarifiers and add a solar field, is made possible through the federal infrastructure bill and a federal inflation reduction bill. “As a member of Congress, my job is just to be able to pass legislation that is beneficial to the cities and towns in Northwest Indiana,” said U.S. Rep.
