Kewanna Water Improvements Groundbreaking

On August 16, the Town of Kewanna held a groundbreaking for the construction of a new water treatment plant aimed at improving the community’s water quality and removing emerging contaminants. The project also includes the replacement of aging service lines targeted by the EPA as requiring replacement to protect the health of residents.

The aim is to enhance the community’s water quality. The project will address health and safety concerns by replacing lead service lines and installing a water treatment filtration plant to remove emerging contaminants. At present, residents in the town are dealing with elevated levels of iron, arsenic, and manganese. These improvements directly target health and safety concerns, significantly elevating the standard of living in the community, a factor that is often overlooked by most residents in the state.

The project is a comprehensive overhaul, involving the installation of a new 250-GPM well, new site piping, a new package-style 250-GPM water treatment unit, new highservice pumps, a new chemical dosing system, a new backwash tank, a new water treatment building, plant piping, a new backup generator, and a new well building. The project also includes the installation of a new water tower mixer in the existing water tower. Furthermore, the existing lead and galvanized customer service lines will be replaced between the meter pits and houses. The scope of work includes material procurement, construction, restoration, and all other necessary work for the project’s completion.

Total funding for the project is $7.67M through the Indiana Finance Authority’s State Revolving Loan Fund. The Town Council and residents fully support these much-needed improvements.
