Project Highlight: Wansford Yard Lift Station

Commonwealth Engineers evaluated and designed the Wansford Yard Lift Station Project.

This project included a new sanitary lift station, gravity sewer interceptor, and force main to address limited capacity in Evansville Water and Sewer Utility’s Highway 41 and Millersburg sanitary sewer basins.

First, the design team identified the existing lift station and upstream interceptor as undersized, which was causing sanitary sewer overflows and increased stress on equipment. Our engineers designed the Wansford Yard Lift Station and Force Main to convey existing and future flows. The station has an initial capacity of 20 MGD and can be upgraded to 25 MGD.

Due to the deep incoming influent sewer, the lift station wet well is approximately 60 feet deep, making the influent box, channels, and mechanical bar screen at approximately 40 feet deep. The project involved eliminating the Pfeiffer Road lift station via a new 30” gravity sewer interceptor installed using open-cut and trenchless tunneling methods. The project team investigated several route and pipe installation alternatives due to the presence of wetlands, a creek crossing, rock, and property owner/easement considerations. The project installed ~850 ft of the interceptor using micro tunneling methods to avoid specific surface impacts.
