COMPLETE A FORM WITH PRELIMINARY INFORMATION FOR AN ENERGY AUDIT
If you have questions regarding this form or an energy audit, please contact Toby Church at 317-888-1177.
Commonwealth Engineers, Inc. is now certified for Energy Auditing through the Indiana Department of Administration Public Works Certification Board.
Commonwealth is certified to perform energy audits and design and oversee the implementation of energy savings projects. Below are a few key reasons why these services are so important:
- Energy issues are here to stay and will only get more serious as there are not quick fixes.
- Energy represents the largest controllable cost of providing water or wastewater services to the public.
- Energy efficiency investments often have outstanding rates of return and can reduce costs at a facility by 5%, 20% or 25% or more.
Commonwealth Engineers offers the following benefits over its competition:
-
Knowledge of creative funding options
-
Project management
-
General contractor services
-
Quality assurance for the customer
-
AEE certified Energy Auditor *
*AEE certification is the most respected and difficult certification to obtain. It is Recognized by the US Department of Energy, US Agency for International Development, State Department, Fortune 1000 companies, utilities, energy service companies, and countless others.
- Process experts
- Not a commercial building – can’t just look at motors and lighting
- Need to be cautious about the process – avoid compliance issues trying to save money
- Can damage equipment because of lack of knowledge of the process and equipment
- Savings can be obtained by modifying the process – again, not just motors and lighting

Power Quality
Today’s Water Treatment Plants are large energy users and with today’s technology, the power provided to a Water Treatment Plant must be reliable and of good quality. Power quality issues can stem from poor power quality provided by the electric utility or power quality problems can originate from equipment at the treatment plant. One of the largest problems we face in the water treatment industry are harmonics. What are harmonics: Technically harmonics are current or voltages with frequencies that are multiples of the fundamental power frequency. Or to put it simply it is noise in your electrical system. Often these harmonics are caused by us trying to do the right thing and save energy or use technology to run more efficiently. Harmonics can be caused by variable frequency drives, fluorescent lights, computers switching, soft starters, etc. Harmonics can cause problems with equipment such as over-heating, inadvertent safety tripping, electronic interference, and over voltage. Many power quality problems can cause trouble with automatic transfer switches (ATS) and switching to generator power when needed which, as you know, is a critical issue. Often diagnosing a power quality problem can be difficult and knowledgeable experts in the field are required. The first step in solving power quality issues is to evaluate the problem. On top of knowledge of the symptoms, power quality analysis can be performed by using high tech monitoring equipment such as a Dranetz PX5 power quality analyzer. This allows you to find out exactly what power quality issues you face and will usually point in the right direction in regard to locating the problem.
When the power quality problem is located the issue can be addressed. Commonwealth provides the below offerings related to power quality:
- Assist customers with utility power issues to avoid premature electronics failures
- Provide power quality analysis
- Can perform power quality surveys with Dranetz equipment
- Best Power Quality Analysis (PQA) equipment in the industry
- Very accurate with a high sampling rate
- Resolution of long-term issues related to power quality
