Liberty Park Sewer Lining

The project work involves lining up to 1,100 linear feet of 12-inch sewers, 500 linear feet of 10-inch sewers, and 9,000 linear feet of 8-inch sewers in Crown Point’s Liberty Park neighborhood. Up to thirty-eight (38) manholes will be rehabilitated. During construction, the contractor will provide advanced notice of the work and what to expect. The work is taking place mostly within the road and right of way, but some of the sewer work will take place in existing sewer easements in the backyards of the homes along the east side of Sycamore St.

This project is being funded through a federal grant with construction administered by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and engineering performed by Commonwealth Engineers, Inc.

WHY IS THIS PROJECT BEING DONE?

Wastewater infrastructure is critical to the health and well-being of the community

Sewers in this neighborhood are currently in poor condition, with roots blocking flow in many areas, collapses, and breaks.

If the sewers fail, wastewater can enter homes or “backup” through their connections to the sewer. Groundwater and rainwater enter the sewers (this is called Inflow and Infiltration “I&I”). I&I causes reduced capacity for the sewers to convey wastewater and a greater chance for overflows; reduced capacity at the WWTP; and higher energy consumption from pumping and treating stormwater.

WHAT TO EXPECT

The proposed fix is lining with CIPP (cured-in-place pipe liner)

CIPP is a polyester liner that expands into the pipe, is injected with resin, and is cured with steam to improve the pipe’s structural integrity and seal out inflow. Lining with this material is estimated to greatly extend the service life of pipe, maybe even doubling it according to some. This process is quicker, less invasive, and much cheaper than replacing pipes. However, it must be noted that some areas will require excavation to repair the pipe prior to lining the pipe.
