Spring Dam Check: A Reminder for Dam Owners

Whether your area has recently seen heavy rainfall or just a few passing showers, routine dam checkups are wise. Even minor issues can become serious problems and major safety hazards if left unaddressed.

With the weather warming up and the grass not yet sky-high, Spring is the perfect time to assess the condition of your dam. Now is your window of opportunity to take a careful look before vegetation gets in the way.

What to Look For

When walking your dam, be on the lookout for:

  • Blocked outlets – These can lead to water backup and added pressure on the dam structure.
  • Holes or depressions – These may indicate internal erosion or animal activity.
  • Signs of erosion – Especially along the downstream slope or spillways.
  • Trees – Any trees growing too close to or directly on the dam could destabilize the structure, particularly if they’ve recently shifted or fallen.
  • Don’t forget to take photos! Documenting the current condition can help you spot changes over time and make it easier to report concerns if they arise.

Safety First

Always prioritize your safety. Avoid:

  • Areas with swirling or fast-moving water
  • Soft or unstable ground
  • Recently fallen trees or debris
  • Blocked outlets holding back water

If you’re unsure about what you’re seeing, or if the work needed goes beyond a basic checkup, reach out to professionals who have experience working with dams. When it comes to structural safety, it is better to ask than to guess.
