New American Iron and Steel (AIS) Requirements & How They Affect Your Water Project

The American Iron and Steel (AIS) provision is now being required for many water resource projects.

The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Rural Development (RD) is now required to follow the American Iron and Steel (AIS) provisions for all Water and Environmental Programs (WEP) projects obligated after May 5, 2017. The State Revolving Loan Fund (SRF) has been following these provisions for a few years on wastewater-funded projects and is now required to incorporate these requirements into water projects as well.

What this means for your project:

All iron and steel products (rebar, castings, pipe, etc.) in your project must be manufactured in the United States. Unlike past programs, mechanical and electrical items are primarily exempt from this requirement. These requirements will be included in the contract documents and require coordination between the project’s Owner, Engineer, and Contractor during construction.
